​Safety Management System
​
A Safety Management System (SMS) is becoming a standard throughout the aviation industry worldwide. It is recognized by the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and civil aviation authorities (CAA) and product/service providers as the next step in the evolution of safety in aviation. SMS is also becoming a standard for the management of safety beyond aviation. Similar management systems are used in the management of other critical areas such as quality, occupational safety, and health, security, environment, etc.

At Akamai Air, we have implemented our own SMS that is "Akamai" (smart) in the type of operations that we conduct. Taking in to effect actual, expected and probable operating factors that can and could have influences on each flight leg.

Safety Programs

Safety begins from both the top-down and the bottom up. Everyone from the receptionist, ramp worker, pilot, manager, and FAA Inspector has a role to perform.

SMS is all about decision-making. Thus it has to be a decision-making tool, not a traditional safety program. It is separate and distinct from the business and its other operational decision-making processes.

It allows the whole team to take a step back and let the known processes speak for themselves. It takes the guesswork right out of the equation so there are no grey areas.

* We choose to use an SMS Program for this reason. It takes a team to make this all come together.
